1 - Introduction to Flowol

Start by opening Flowol and getting the Bridge Lights mimic open. You should also open the small monitor. You can do both by using the Window menu.

Step 1 - Turn a light on and off

Create a flowchart that will turn the green light on and then off after a 3 second delay. Do this by copying the chart to the right.

Use the tools on the toolbar to drag the symbols into the work area.

When you have made the flowchart, push the run button and test your system

You can see a basic video clip of how to use Flowol here.

Step 2 - Putting the system together

Now that you have taken your first steps, it's time to make the main pair of traffic lights work properly.

Keep your flowchart above the bottom green line. You can let it snake upwards to the right if you need more space.

You need to make the following sequence:

Red lights on for 5 seconds

Red = output 3

Red and amber on for 2 seconds

Amber = output 2

Green on for 5 seconds

Green = output 1

Amber for 2 seconds

Red for 5 seconds

Stop

When you have finished and tested your system, put your name on the top of the page using the text tool (the letter T). Print your flowchart.

Step 3 - Extension

Make a second flowchart, alongside the first. This will control the other set of lights.

Click on output numbers at the bottom of the screen to see which one is linked to each light.

The idea is that when traffic can go from one side of the bridge, it must stop at the other because the bridge is too narrow for cars to pass each other on it.

The last step is to create a loop. Instead of having the flowchart finish with a Stop symbol, use an arrow to loop back to the first step so that the lights are in a repeating sequence, or loop.

An example of a loop is shown on the right. It will run until the user clicks the Stop button.
