2 - Responding to Input

In the last lesson, you made a series of outputs occur in a sequence.

In this lesson, your system will wait for an input to trigger certain outputs.

Stage 1 - The Pelican Crossing

Open the Pelican mimic and the small monitor.

You are going to create a sequence that will change the lights from green to red when the button is pressed at the crossing.

Create the flowchart on the right. Notice how we use the diamond symbol to test conditions.

This flowchart is not complete. Finish it off using the following information:

  • When the button is pressed, the amber light shows for 2 seconds
  • The red light is then shown for 5 seconds
  • Red and amber for 2 seconds
  • Back to green
  • Don't use a stop symbol. Instead, have an arrow loop round from the last stage back to the first stage after the start symbol.

When you run the system, use your mouse to click on the button at the crossing to test whether it is working. You can see a video of how the lights should run by clicking here.

When your system works, label the flowchart with your name using the Text tool and print a copy for your folder.

Stage 2 - The Lighthouse

You are going to use the same principle to run the Lighthouse mimic.

The idea is that when the sun is not out, the light in the lighthouse goes on and so do the lights on the stairs. The foghorn should sound a 2-second blast every 5 seconds.

When you have finished and tested your system, label it with your name and print a copy of your flowchart.
